Core Christian Beliefs

Core Christian Beliefs

What do Christians believe? What are some common misconceptions?

Quick Summary

  • There is one God.
  • Jesus Christ, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are three persons but one being. (Jesus is subservient to the Father.)
  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God, suffered and died for our sins in about 30 AD and was then resurrected three days later.
  • All of the Bible is true because God has confirmed it through miracles and the people he sent.
  • You can be forgiven for your sins and saved by God's grace if you have true faith in Him.
  • True faith involves obedience to God, through love, as, 'The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love,' and the Lord said, 'If you love me, you will keep my commandments.'
  • Loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind and loving your neighbour are the two greatest commandments.

What Christians Must Do

You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! (James 2:19).

It is not enough to understand that Jesus is the Son of God and accept that fact. One must do the will of God to be a Christian. Jesus said the following:

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' (Matthew 7:21–23)

For only a few of many passages which prove that this is true, read Matthew 12:36–37, James 2:18–24, and Luke 6:43–49.

There are many instructions explaining the particular things we should do and should not do, and one should read the Bible often for correction and increasing in knowledge. That being said, Jesus provided this general rule:

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

A few particular instructions that are non-negotiable follow:

  • Pray.
  • Help those in need, especially your own family and fellow believers.
  • Work hard.
  • Call on the Lord when you need help.
  • Do not have sex outside of marriage, watch porn, or do anything homosexual.
  • Do not lie, cheat, or steal.
  • Do not be a drunk.
  • Do not use God's name as a curse word.
  • Do not be a hypocrite (holding others to a standard you don't hold yourself to).
